Rui Pinheiro - Conductor

Recent performances with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra:

Loyal BSO supporters braved the scorching sun to make this near-capacity Sunday afternoon fund raiser a rousing success under the direction of Rui Pinheiro. It is fast becoming a BSO 'war-horse', yet Pinheiro took the reins of Saint-Saens' Symphony No. 3 and, in an electrically-charged performance, gave the finest account I've heard in the Lighthouse. From the early stillness Pinheiro balanced the threads with exemplary clarity and when the organ's lovely, solemn harmony emerged the effect was magical. The finale, with a panoply of brass and percussion challenging the organ, was absolutely magnificent.

BSO Benevolent Fund Concert, Lighthouse, Poole

Bournemouth Echo, May 2012

With 75 players in front of him, Rui Pinheiro had the right firepower to bring the best out of these themes and, without ever losing control of the big sounds coming from the orchestra, made excellent use of these exciting musical prospects.

'Saturday Night at the Movies', Colston Hall, Bristol, The Post, Bristol, May 2012

With Rui Pinheiro on the podium we were assured well-focused readings.

'A Diamond Jubilee' Concert, Bournemouth Echo, April 2012

Right from the first notes of Beethoven's Egmont Overture under the direction of Rui Pinheiro it was clear that the Pavilion soundstage had been transformed. Pinheiro conjured up a superb atmosphere (Weber: Der Freischutz).

Bournemouth Echo, October 2011

Portuguese conductor Rui Pinheiro delivered the score with welcome urgency, setting brisk tempi in the quick movements and encouraging the brass to give rasping weight to Borodin's strikingly individual harmonies. Pinheiro supported her enthusiastically {Chloe Hanslip} and shaped the Grieg skilfully.

BSO at Chichester Cathedral, September 2011

Pinheiro's immaculate orchestral balancing delighted our ears. Pinheiro's unflagging momentum in Elgar's glorious Cockaigne Overture and his well controlled performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture must nevertheless yield to an outstanding account of Schubert's Symphony No.8 "Unfinished". Here the breadth of mystery, mood and drama were all captured with immense eloquence and vitality. It is a work in which beauty abounds and the Andante's exquisitely observed dynamics and woodwind solos could not have been lovelier.

Bournemouth Echo, January 2011

Under way around the island of Staffa I was immediately impressed by Rui Pinheiro's highly atmospheric account of Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture as we bobbed past Fingal's Cave. Transporting us to Russia to celebrate the fictitious life of Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije confirmed Pinheiro's immense respect for the music, capturing the sense of fun at the vodka-fuelled Wedding.

On to Finland where Sibelius stirred the spirit of rebellion with his Karelia Suite showing Pinheiro's finely gauged attention to the music's character.

Bournemouth Echo, November 2010

Rui Pinheiro was a focused and sensitive conductor...his authority in front of an orchestra with an excellent performance.

Manuel Pedro Ferreira, Publico

Pinheiro with Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa at Dias da Música Festival, May 2014

[Rui Pinheiro] is a sober conductor, with restrained but firm gestures, always keeping the musicians attentive to his baton. Rui Pinheiro is a conductor which, by the simplicity of his conducting, achieves exactly what he wants: a brilliant and perfect execution of the works he interprets.
