Dan Styffe - Double Bass |

Dan Styffe has recorded three solo CDs for SIMAX Classics to great critical-acclaim and a fourth disc is planned for release in 2012. Passionately keen on promoting new works, Dan has commissioned a number of new pieces for the bass and enjoys regular collaboration with such composers as Rolf Martinsson, Fredrik Högberg, Teppo Hauta-Aho, Bernard Salles, Paul Ramsier, Rune Rebne, Henrik Hellstenius, Jon Øyvind Ness, Gisle Kverndokk, John Persen, Asbjørn Schaatun and Ruben Sverre Gjertsen. Marcus Paus and Erlend Skumsvoll are currently writing works dedicated to Styffe. In April 2011, Dan Styffe performed the world premiere of Rolf Martinsson´s Double Bass Concerto with the Oslo Philharmonic under conductor, Jukka-Pekka Saraste. A CD recording on SIMAX will also be released in the near future. A second performance of the Martinsson will take place in October 2011 with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ingar Bergy. Also later this year, Dan heads back to the studio to record Fredrik Högberg´s concerto, "Hitting the First Bass", with the Tromsø Chamber Orchestra led by Kolbjørn Holthe. Previously, Dan performed the world premiere of the concerto with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra led by Isabelle van Keulen. After completing his studies, Dan was appointed Principal Bass of the Norwegian Opera Orchestra and later, the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Iona Brown. Alongside his solo and chamber work, Dan continues to enjoy performing as an orchestral principal, now as co-Principal of the Oslo Philharmonic under such luminary chief conductors as Mariss Jansons, André Previn and Jukka Pekka Saraste. Additionally, Styffe was a member of the Borealis chamber ensemble for many years. Dan Styffe plays a Gasparo da Saló double bass made in Brescia, Italia in c. 1580. by arrangement with the Dextra Musica Foundation and Sparebankstiftelsen DnB NOR. Born in Sweden, Dan spent most of his early professional career in Norway. Having studied with Göran Nyberg, Knut Guettler and Gary Karr before becoming Karr's assistant in the US from 1981 - 82, Dan made his Oslo Solo-Debut in 1985. Since then, Dan has regularly appeared as soloist and chamber musician in some of the leading international festivals and major concert halls across the world. Dan Styffe frequently participates in bass conventions including Paris, Berlin, Wroclaw, Penn State, Odense, and more recently in 2011, San Fransisco and Brno. He has also been a jury member of many international bass competitions. |
